Point spread

The expected margin of victory in a game. A team that is -3.5 is the favorite and must win by at least 4 points to win the bet, while the underdog in that same game is +3.5 and must either win the game or lose by 3 or fewer to win the bet. Oddsmakers use the point spread primarily in football and basketball to encourage action on both teams, no matter the disparity in skill between them.

Also known as the over/under, it’s the total points, runs or goals expected in a game between both teams. Bettors can wager on whether or not the teams will combine to score over or under the total.

A form of betting in which the team only has to win the game, with the strength of each team reflected in the line. A bettor would have to risk $150 to win $100 on a -150 favorite, while a +130 underdog will return them $130 on a $100 bet.
